Packing, Carry-Ons & Airport Chaos: Travel Lessons I Learned the Hard Way

Packing, Carry-Ons & Airport Chaos:

Travel Lessons I Learned the Hard Way

There are some travel lessons you learn from reading articles.

There are others you learn because someone gave you really good advice.

And then there are the lessons you learn while standing in an airport thinking:

"Well...I'm never doing THAT again." 😂

Those are usually the lessons that stick.

After enough trips, I've realized I'm probably never going to become the person who casually tosses three outfits into a tiny suitcase and announces:

"That's all I need!"

That's just not who I am.

My brain likes backups.

And backup plans for the backups.

But I have learned that there is a difference between being prepared and making travel harder on yourself.

I've forgotten things.

Packed things I absolutely did not need.

Buried important things at the bottom of bags.

Carried things I should have checked.

Checked things I definitely should have carried.

And learned that airport-day organization can make the difference between:

"Vacation starts NOW!"

and...

"WHY DID WE THINK TRAVELING WAS A GOOD IDEA?!"

So these are a few of the packing, carry-on, and airport lessons I've learned along the way.

Packing Hacks I Learned the Hard Way

First lesson?

More stuff does not necessarily mean more prepared.

I know.

I'm still working on accepting this one. 😂

I used to think packing meant preparing for every possible scenario.

What if it's colder than expected?

What if we go somewhere fancy?

What if somebody spills something?

What if I suddenly become a completely different person on vacation who wears clothes I never wear at home?

Apparently vacation-me has an extensive imaginary wardrobe.

Now I try to pack outfits, not random individual pieces.

If something can't work with more than one outfit, I really think about whether it deserves suitcase space.

A few other things I've learned:

  • Packing cubes can keep everyone's things separated and make unpacking easier.

  • Keep a bag for dirty clothes so clean and worn clothes don't become one giant suitcase mystery.

  • Put shoes where they won't end up touching everything else.

  • Don't fill every inch of your suitcase before you've even left home.

  • Check the weather again shortly before you leave instead of packing for every climate on Earth.

  • If you're flying, know your airline's current baggage size and weight rules before you start packing.

And perhaps most importantly...

Leave room for the things you're inevitably going to buy.

Because apparently I believe souvenirs don't take up suitcase space on the way home.

My Carry-On Has One Job:

Keep the Important Stuff With Me

My carry-on isn't where I try to fit half my closet.

It's where I keep the things I really don't want separated from me.

My basic rule is:

If losing access to it for a day would create a serious problem, it probably belongs with me.

That includes important travel documents, necessary medications, valuables, and essential electronics.

Then I add the things that can make an airport or flight significantly more comfortable.

Katelyn's Carry-On Non-Negotiables

  • Identification and necessary travel documents

  • Necessary medications

  • Wallet/payment methods

  • Phone

  • Charging cables

  • Portable charger

  • Headphones

  • Snacks

  • A refillable water bottle to fill after security

  • A sweatshirt or light layer

  • Basic toiletries that meet current security requirements

  • Anything valuable I don't want in checked luggage

  • A change of clothes when it makes sense for the trip

And when traveling with kids?

More snacks.

You thought you packed enough.

You did not.

Pack another snack.

😂

For longer trips or trips involving checked luggage, I also like having enough essentials in the carry-on to get through an unexpected luggage delay without immediately needing to replace everything.

Because the suitcase can take its own little vacation.

Your medication, documents, and other true essentials shouldn't go with it.

Airport Mistakes I Try Not to Make Anymore

Airport stress often starts before you ever reach the airport.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that travel day isn't the day I want to test how quickly my family can accomplish something.

I'd much rather have extra time and sit at the gate than spend the entire drive wondering whether we're going to make the flight.

I've also learned to think about accessibility when packing my airport bag.

Don't put the passport underneath six sweatshirts, a tablet, snacks, three chargers, and half the contents of your house.

Anything you'll repeatedly need should be easy to reach.

Before leaving home, I want to know:

✔️Do we have everyone's IDs or required documents?

✔️Are the devices charged?

✔️Do we have the medications?

✔️Are bags within the airline's current limits?

✔️Do we know where we're parking or how we're getting to the terminal?

✔️If traveling internationally, have we checked the entry requirements for the destination?

✔️Do we have enough time?

And if you're traveling with children, a disability, or someone who may need additional airport assistance, researching available services before travel day can make a big difference.

Preparation doesn't eliminate every surprise.

But it can eliminate some of the completely avoidable ones.

The Stuff You Only Learn by Traveling

This might be the biggest travel lesson I've learned:

Something will probably not go exactly according to plan.

And that's okay.

A flight might be delayed.

Someone might forget something.

The weather might change.

A restaurant you wanted to visit might be closed.

Someone will probably get hungry five minutes after everyone agreed they weren't hungry.

And despite all the preparation in the world...

At some point, you have to stop trying to control every possible outcome and just go on the trip.

This one is especially hard for my AuDHD brain because I love knowing what's coming.

Research makes me feel prepared.

Lists make me feel prepared.

Backup plans make me feel prepared.

Packing for seventeen hypothetical scenarios apparently makes me feel prepared. 😂

But I've learned that the goal isn't to create a vacation where absolutely nothing unexpected happens.

It's to prepare for the important things...

And leave enough room to handle everything else as it comes.

Sometimes those unexpected moments become the stories you laugh about later anyway.

The Night-Before Rule I Wish I Always Followed

There is one travel habit that makes everything easier:

Don't leave everything for the morning you leave.

The night before, I try to have the important stuff together.

✔️Bags packed.

✔️Documents located.

✔️Medications accounted for.

✔️Devices charging.

✔️Transportation confirmed.

✔️Clothes ready.

✔️And snacks where I won't forget them.

Will I occasionally still be walking around the house at the last minute saying:

"I know I'm forgetting something..."

Absolutely.

I am still me.

😂

But the fewer decisions I have to make on travel morning, the better.

Especially when everyone else suddenly develops questions.

"Where are my headphones?"

"Can I bring this?"

"Did you pack my..."

And my personal favorite:

"What time are we leaving?"

The same time I've told you approximately fourteen times.

To Sum It Up...

Travel has taught me that being prepared doesn't mean bringing everything you own.

It means knowing what actually matters.

Keep the important things with you.

Make the things you'll need at the airport easy to reach.

Check the details before travel day.

Give yourself time.

Pack the snacks.

Always pack the snacks.

And remember that if you forget something replaceable?

There is probably a store.

If something doesn't go exactly according to plan?

You'll figure it out.

And if you come home saying:

"Okay...next time we're doing THAT differently."

Congratulations.

You've just learned another travel hack the hard way.

😂
