The City I Never Had to Leave to Discover
Why Pittsburgh May Be America's Most Underrated Travel Destination
Most of the stories I write begin with a boarding pass.
A flight to Mexico.
A cruise ship pulling away from port.
A weekend in New York City.
A bucket-list adventure somewhere new.
This story is different.
Because this isn't about a place I traveled to.
It's about the place I've always called home.
Pittsburgh.
And if you've never visited the Steel City, let me tell you something...
You're missing out.

The Tunnel That Changes Everything
One of my favorite things about Pittsburgh happens before you ever set foot in the city itself. If you're arriving from Pittsburgh International Airport, the journey takes you through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, and for a few moments, you're surrounded by nothing but darkness. Then, almost like a perfectly timed movie scene, you burst out of the tunnel and are greeted by one of the most breathtaking city reveals in America.
Suddenly, the entire city unfolds before your eyes the gleaming skyline, the three rivers converging below, the iconic yellow bridges stretching across the water, the stadiums standing proudly along the shorelines, and the energy of a city built on grit, innovation, and pride. It's a view that never gets old. I've made that drive thousands of times throughout my life, and even now, I still find myself slowing down just a little to take it all in.
There’s something special about that moment. It's the instant you realize Pittsburgh isn't just another city; it's a place with character, history, and a soul all its own. Visitors often tell me they weren't expecting such a dramatic entrance, and many say it's one of the most memorable city arrivals they've ever experienced. As someone fortunate enough to call Pittsburgh home, I couldn't agree more. Every time those tunnel walls open up and the city appears, it reminds me exactly why I love living here.
Three Rivers, One Incredible City
Unlike many great American cities that grew around oceans, beaches, or massive lakes, Pittsburgh owes its existence to something entirely different... the power and importance of three rivers. The Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together at the very tip of downtown to form the Ohio River, creating a geographic crossroads that helped shape not only Pittsburgh's future but much of America's westward expansion. These waterways fueled the steel mills that earned Pittsburgh its nickname as the Steel City, carried goods and industry throughout the region, and played a critical role in building the economic engine that transformed a frontier settlement into one of America's most important cities.
Even today, the rivers remain woven into the fabric of everyday life here. Some of my favorite afternoons are spent at Point State Park, standing where those three rivers meet, watching boats glide across the water while Pittsburgh's stunning skyline rises around me. There's something peaceful and almost symbolic about being at the exact spot where so much history began.
Whether it's families enjoying the fountain, boaters exploring the waterways, or visitors taking in the incredible views, the Point has a way of bringing people together. It's more than just a park, it's the heart of Pittsburgh, a place where the city's past, present, and future all seem to converge. And for many of us who call Western Pennsylvania home, there's no place that better captures the spirit of the region.
The View Every Visitor Needs to Experience
If there’s one experience I tell every first-time visitor they absolutely cannot miss while in Pittsburgh, it’s taking a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline. Long before modern highways and ride-sharing apps existed, these iconic cable cars helped Pittsburgh residents travel up and down the steep hillsides that surround the city. Today, they offer something even more valuable, a chance to experience one of the most spectacular views in America.
As the incline slowly climbs the face of Mount Washington, the city begins to reveal itself little by little. With every passing second, the view grows larger and more impressive until you reach the summit and step out onto the observation deck. Suddenly, Pittsburgh stretches out before you in all its glory. The Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers shimmer below as they wind through the city. Dozens of golden bridges connect neighborhood after neighborhood. Downtown's skyline rises proudly from the riverbanks, creating a scene that feels almost too perfect to be real.
I've stood at the top of Mount Washington countless times, and it never loses its magic. During the day, it's beautiful. At sunset, when the sky explodes with shades of orange, pink, and gold, it's breathtaking. And after dark, when the city lights reflect off the rivers and the bridges glow against the night sky, it's simply unforgettable. People spend thousands of dollars traveling around the world in search of views that leave a lasting impression. What many don't realize is that one of the most stunning urban vistas anywhere can be found right here in Pittsburgh, waiting at the top of a century-old incline that continues to tell the story of this remarkable city.

A City Built for Family Memories
Growing up in Pittsburgh means growing up with Kennywood. For generations of families across Western Pennsylvania, a trip to this beloved amusement park wasn't just something you did during the summer... it was a tradition, a rite of passage, and a collection of memories waiting to be made. Ask almost anyone from the Pittsburgh area about Kennywood, and you'll hear a story. Maybe it was the thrill of conquering their very first roller coaster. Maybe it was a summer job that turned into lifelong friendships. Maybe it was a first date spent walking hand-in-hand through the park, sharing laughs and creating memories that still bring a smile decades later. All of this was captured in a song called "Kennywood Park" by Freddy Cannon back in 1986.
For me, Kennywood has always been the unofficial soundtrack of summer. The moment you walk through the gates, you're greeted by the unmistakable aroma of Potato Patch fries, a scent that instantly transports me back to childhood. There's the excitement of hearing the roller coasters roar overhead, the anticipation building as you wait in line for favorites like Phantom's Revenge, and the simple joy of spending a carefree day with family and friends. What makes Kennywood special isn't just the rides it's the nostalgia. It's a place where grandparents bring grandchildren to experience the same attractions they enjoyed years ago. It's where stories are passed down, traditions continue, and new memories are created every season.
In a city rich with history and tradition, Kennywood holds a special place in Pittsburgh's heart. It's more than an amusement park; it's part of our identity, woven into the fabric of growing up in Western Pennsylvania. And somehow, generation after generation, it continues to deliver the same magic that has made it one of Pittsburgh's most treasured landmarks for well over a century.
Science, Animals, and Discovery
While Pittsburgh is often celebrated for its sports teams, rich history, and iconic skyline, what many visitors don't realize is that it's also one of the best family-friendly destinations in America. As a parent, some of my favorite experiences in the city have come from seeing Pittsburgh through the eyes of a child. There's something special about watching kids discover the world around them, and few places make that easier than the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Every visit feels like a new adventure. One moment you're standing face-to-face with towering giraffes gracefully roaming their habitat, and the next you're watching powerful tigers prowl through the grass or marveling at the sheer size of an elephant. The polar bears are always a crowd favorite, and seeing the excitement on a child's face as they encounter animals they've only read about in books or seen on television is something that never gets old. The sense of wonder is contagious, no matter your age.
The same can be said for the Carnegie Science Center, a place where curiosity takes center stage and learning feels more like an adventure than a lesson. From hands-on exhibits and interactive displays to exploring the mysteries of space and technology, every corner offers something new to discover. One of the most unique experiences is touring the historic submarine permanently docked along the river, giving visitors a glimpse into life beneath the waves and a chance to experience history firsthand. It's the kind of attraction that captivates both children and adults, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring together. What I love most about Pittsburgh's family attractions is that they strike the perfect balance between entertainment and education. Kids leave having had an incredible time, often without realizing just how much they've learned along the way. In a world where finding experiences that engage the entire family can sometimes be challenging, Pittsburgh continues to deliver. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or have called the city home your entire life, there's always another discovery waiting around the corner, making Pittsburgh a place where family memories are created year after year.

Neighborhoods That Feel Like Different Countries
One of the things that makes Pittsburgh so unique is that it doesn't feel like one giant city... it feels like dozens of small towns woven together, each with its own personality, culture, and history. Spend a little time exploring and you'll quickly discover that every neighborhood tells a different story. From the Italian heritage of Bloomfield and the Eastern European influences of Polish Hill to the diverse food scene and cultural richness of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh's neighborhoods are what give the city its character. Then there's the Strip District, one of my favorite places in the city. Filled with bustling markets, family-owned businesses, coffee shops, specialty foods, and street vendors, it's a place where locals and visitors come together. If you want to understand the true spirit of Pittsburgh hardworking, authentic, welcoming, and proud of its roots... the Strip District is the perfect place to start.
Let's Talk About the Food
No travel guide to Pittsburgh would be complete without discussing food.
And trust me...
Pittsburgh can eat.
Best Sushi in the Burgh
As a self-proclaimed sushi lover, there are two Pittsburgh-area restaurants I find myself recommending again and again. If you're looking for a more upscale dining experience, Little Tokyo offers some of the freshest sushi and most beautifully presented dishes in the region, making it a favorite for special occasions or a memorable night out. On the other hand, if you're searching for incredible value without sacrificing quality, Sushi Bomb in Robinson is tough to beat. With an extensive all-you-can-eat menu, a huge variety of rolls, and consistently great food, it's become a local favorite for good reason. Whether you're a sushi enthusiast or simply looking to try something new, both restaurants showcase why Pittsburgh's food scene continues to surprise visitors from all over.
The Burger Worth the Drive
Every city seems to have an ongoing debate about who serves the best burger, and around Pittsburgh, you'll get plenty of passionate opinions. But if someone asks for my recommendation, my answer is simple: Jerry's Curb Service in Bridge Water. This local institution has been serving up outstanding burgers for generations and has earned a loyal following by focusing on what matters most... great food done right. There's nothing overly complicated about it. No trendy gimmicks, no elaborate toppings stacked a mile high, and no marketing designed for social media. Just a perfectly cooked burger, fresh ingredients, and a classic experience, that feels like you're back in the 1970's at a carhop. that keeps people coming back year after year. In a world where restaurants often try to reinvent the wheel, Jerry's reminds us that sometimes the best meals are the simplest ones. One bite is usually all it takes to understand why so many Western Pennsylvanians consider it a hometown favorite.
The Best Pizza in Pittsburgh
I'm probably about to spark a debate among Pittsburghers, but that's part of the fun when talking about pizza in this city. Everyone has their favorite spot, and loyalties can run surprisingly deep. But if you ask me where to find the best pizza in Pittsburgh, my answer is Fiori's. For decades, this local favorite has been serving the kind of pizza that keeps people coming back and recommending it to friends and family. The rich, flavorful sauce, generous layer of perfectly melted cheese, and signature crust come together to create a slice that embodies everything great pizza should be. It's simple, consistent, and incredibly satisfying. While Pittsburgh's pizza scene is filled with worthy contenders, Fiori's has earned its reputation as one of the city's true legends. Whether you're a lifelong local or visiting for the first time, adding Fiori's to your Pittsburgh food itinerary is a decision you won't regret.
Comfort Food, Pittsburgh Style
One restaurant that perfectly captures the spirit of old-school Pittsburgh is Amel's. Tucked away in the South Hills, it's the kind of place that has been quietly winning over locals for generations without ever needing to chase trends or reinvent itself. The moment you walk through the door, you can feel the history. The warm atmosphere, familiar faces, and welcoming staff create the kind of dining experience that feels increasingly rare these days. Whether you're stopping in for one of their Mediterranean specialties, fresh seafood dishes, or simply enjoying a meal with family and friends, there's a sense that you're part of something that's been bringing Pittsburghers together for decades. It's the type of restaurant where regulars are greeted by name, where celebrations become traditions, and where one visit often turns into a lifetime of returning. In a world filled with chains and constantly changing food trends, Amel's remains a reminder of what makes Pittsburgh special... great food, genuine hospitality, and a commitment to treating every guest like family. Thankfully, places like Amel's still exist, and they're a big reason why Pittsburgh's dining scene continues to feel so authentic and welcoming.

My Favorite Place in Pittsburgh Isn't on Land
While Pittsburgh's attractions, restaurants, and neighborhoods are what draw many people to the city, some of my favorite experiences happen in a place many visitors never think to explore the rivers themselves. Several years ago, I joined Freedom Boat Club, and it completely changed the way I experience Pittsburgh. There's something special about untying from the dock and heading out onto the water as the city begins to unfold around you from an entirely new perspective. The iconic bridges seem even more impressive, the skyline rises differently from the riverbanks, and the hustle of everyday life somehow feels a little farther away. Out on the water, Pittsburgh transforms from a city you visit into a city you truly experience. Some of my most cherished memories have been made aboard a boat on these rivers watching spectacular sunsets paint the sky, taking in fireworks reflecting off the water, spending quality time with family and friends, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon cruising beneath the bridges that define the city's landscape. It's peaceful, relaxing, and uniquely Pittsburgh. For me, there's no better way to appreciate the beauty and character of the Steel City than from the very rivers that helped build it.
The Travel Secret Most People Don't Know
One of the things I love most about being a member of Freedom Boat Club is that the benefits extend far beyond Pittsburgh. What many people don't realize is that your membership gives you access to hundreds of locations across the United States and beyond, allowing you to enjoy the same boating lifestyle while traveling. It's one of those perks that completely changes the way you think about vacations. I've personally taken advantage of the program in places like Tampa and Bonita Springs, Florida, and it's incredibly convenient. Instead of searching for rental companies, comparing prices, or booking expensive excursions, I simply reserve a boat through my membership and head out on the water. Whether it's exploring the Gulf Coast, cruising through beautiful waterways, or spending a relaxing day on the ocean, the experience is seamless. For someone like me who loves both travel and boating, it's one of the best memberships I've ever joined. It adds an entirely new dimension to every trip and turns destinations you already love into places you can experience from a whole new perspective. For boating enthusiasts who enjoy exploring new places, it's truly a game changer.
Why the Pittsburgh Location Is So Special
The boats are fantastic.
But what truly sets Pittsburgh apart is the staff.
Dylan absolutely found the right person when Joe took over the Pittsburgh operation.
I've visited multiple Freedom Boat Club locations across the country, and I can honestly say the Pittsburgh team sets the standard.
Need help unloading your vehicle?
They're already walking over.
Need assistance carrying gear?
They're happy to help.
Need docking assistance?
They're right there.
New boater?
They'll help you gain confidence.
Experienced captain?
They'll still treat you like family.
The friendliness and professionalism of the Pittsburgh staff is second to none.
They genuinely care about members.
And it shows.
Every single day.

Yet every time I cross one of Pittsburgh's bridges and see that skyline appear, I'm reminded of something simple.
Sometimes the greatest destination isn't the one you travel to.
It's the one that never leaves your heart.
And for me, that place will always be Pittsburgh.
