Why Your Kids Won’t Remember the Toys, But They’ll Remember the Trip
As parents, it’s so easy to want to give our kids everything.
We work hard, sacrifice constantly, and naturally want to see those big smiles when we surprise them with the newest toy, gadget, game, or something they’ve been begging for. There’s nothing wrong with that. Seeing your child light up with excitement is one of the best feelings in the world.
But if we’re being honest, most toys eventually end up in a pile somewhere.
They get played with for a while, then forgotten in a bedroom corner, stuffed into a closet, or replaced by the next new thing they want. Childhood moves fast, and interests change even faster.
What doesn’t fade so easily are memories.

That’s why I truly believe one of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn’t something wrapped in a box.....it’s an experience.
It’s a trip.
It’s an adventure.
It’s time together.
Years from now, your kids may not remember the toy they got for their birthday when they were seven or the gadget they begged for at Christmas.
But they will remember the trip where they saw dolphins jumping beside the boat.
They’ll remember splashing in the ocean for the first time, spotting wildlife on a hike, riding a roller coaster with pure excitement, or laughing until their stomach hurt during a silly family moment.
Those memories stay.

Travel creates something toys never can: shared experiences.
When families travel together, they step outside of routine.
The usual schedules, homework, dishes, laundry, work stress, and endless to-do lists temporarily fade into the background.
Suddenly, life becomes less about rushing through responsibilities and more about being present with one another.
That kind of presence is powerful.

Some of the memories kids hold onto forever aren’t even the “perfect” moments. In fact, sometimes the unexpected mishaps become the funniest stories.
Maybe everyone got caught in a sudden downpour during an excursion.
Maybe someone got seasick on a boat ride.
Maybe you got lost trying to find a restaurant.
Maybe a bug landed on someone and everyone screamed and laughed.
At the time, those moments may feel chaotic...but years later, they often become the stories everyone still talks about.

Those little moments become part of your family’s story.
I’ve noticed that some of the most meaningful adventures with kids don’t even have to be extravagant.
Adventure can be a cruise, an all-inclusive resort, a beach vacation, a national park, kayaking, geocaching, hiking, or simply exploring somewhere new together.
What matters most isn’t always the destination....it’s the connection created while experiencing it.

Children also experience the world with such pure wonder.
They notice things adults often overlook.
They get excited over shells on the beach, tiny crabs running through the sand, birds flying overhead, animal tracks on a trail, or a rainbow after the rain.
Traveling with children reminds us to slow down and see the world through fresh eyes.
I think that’s one of the most beautiful parts of family travel.
Kids teach us wonder.
They remind us to be curious, playful, and fully present.

Personally, some of my favorite memories with my own children haven’t come from material things...they’ve come from adventures. Whether it’s being out on the water, exploring nature, spotting wildlife, or simply sharing laughs during a fun outing, those are the moments that stay in my heart.
My son and daughter each experience adventure in their own unique way, and I love seeing the excitement and joy that travel brings them.
The older I get, the more I realize that children may forget the things we buy them, but they rarely forget how we made them feel.
They remember feeling safe.
They remember feeling happy.
They remember laughing.
They remember being together.
And that matters.

One day, your children will grow up.
They’ll build lives of their own, create traditions with their own families, and tell stories about their childhood. My hope for all parents is that when those stories are told, many of them begin with:
“Remember when we went…”
Remember when we took that cruise?
Remember when we saw that whale?
Remember when we went ziplining?
Remember when we got caught in the rain?
Remember when we stayed up watching the stars?
Those are the moments that become priceless.

You only get so many summers with your kids at each age.
That thought hits hard.
The little years pass quickly.
The messy years pass quickly.
Even the exhausting years pass quickly.
That’s why I believe we shouldn’t wait for the “perfect” time to travel. There will always be bills to pay, chores to finish, and responsibilities to handle. Life will always be busy. But childhood doesn’t pause while we wait for the perfect moment.
The truth is, the best time to make memories is now.

At Ever After Escapes, we believe travel is about so much more than booking a trip...it’s about creating moments your family will carry forever.
