Grandparents Make the Best Travel Buddies
When people think about travel buddies, they often picture a spouse, best friend, or children.
But I think one of the most underrated travel companions of all might just be grandparents.

There’s something incredibly special about traveling with grandparents.
They bring a unique kind of magic to a trip, one that has less to do with rushing from one activity to the next and more to do with appreciating the journey itself.
They notice things others might miss.
They tell stories sparked by memories.
They carry wisdom, patience, and perspective that can turn even an ordinary trip into something meaningful.
Grandparents truly make some of the best travel buddies.

In a world that constantly feels rushed, grandparents often remind us to slow down.
They aren’t always focused on checking every item off an itinerary or chasing the next activity.
Instead, they often appreciate the little things: a beautiful sunrise, a scenic drive, a peaceful conversation, wildlife in nature, or simply sitting together enjoying a view.
Traveling with them can be a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best moments aren’t planned....they’re felt.
That slower pace can be a gift.
Travel with grandparents often becomes less about “doing everything” and more about soaking in the experience together.
And those moments stay with you.

One of the most beautiful parts of traveling with grandparents is watching the bond they share with grandchildren grow even stronger.
There’s something so heartwarming about seeing generations connect through shared experiences.
A child may not remember every toy they received growing up, but they’ll remember building sandcastles with Grandpa, collecting seashells with Grandma, spotting dolphins on a boat excursion, or hearing family stories while watching the sunset.
Those memories become treasures.

Multigenerational travel creates opportunities for stories to be shared in ways everyday life rarely allows.
Sometimes travel opens doors to conversations that don’t happen around busy dinner tables or between errands.
Long drives, relaxing evenings, scenic cruises, and quiet moments often lead to grandparents sharing stories from their childhood, lessons they’ve learned, adventures they’ve had, and memories from years gone by.
Those stories matter.
They become part of family history.
They help children understand where they come from and create a deeper connection between generations.

I also think grandparents often bring a sense of wonder that surprises people.
Even after decades of life experience, many grandparents still light up at incredible travel moments. Seeing whales breach in the ocean, watching a glacier calve in Alaska, standing before towering mountains, or exploring somewhere they’ve always dreamed of visiting.
There’s something inspiring about watching someone fulfill a lifelong dream.

Personally, this idea hits especially close to home.
Before my grandfather (who I lovingly called my Pap) passed away, one of his biggest dreams was to go to Alaska. My mom made that dream come true and took him there, and he had the most incredible experience.
Knowing he got to see a place he had always dreamed about means so much to me.
That memory reminds me why travel is so important.
Sometimes a trip becomes far more than just a vacation.
Sometimes it becomes a dream fulfilled.
Sometimes it becomes a memory that lives on long after the trip is over.
That’s one of the reasons I believe we shouldn’t wait too long to take the trip.
It’s so easy to think there will always be more time.
More summers.
More vacations.
More opportunities.
But life moves quickly.
The older I get, the more I realize how precious time truly is.
Especially with the people we love most.
Grandparents won’t be here forever.

That truth can be difficult to think about, but it also makes shared experiences even more meaningful.
The vacations, road trips, cruises, beach days, and adventures we take together become part of what we carry with us long after those moments have passed.
And those memories are priceless.
The wonderful thing about traveling with grandparents is that there are so many ways to make the experience special.
For some families, that might be a relaxing beach vacation where everyone can unwind together.

For others, it may be an Alaska cruise, a national park adventure, a scenic train ride, or a multigenerational trip to an all-inclusive resort where every age group can enjoy something.

The destination matters, of course.
But what matters even more is the togetherness.
The laughter.
The stories.
The conversations.
The shared wonder.
Those are the things you remember.
One day, years from now, I don’t think most families will remember every hotel room, restaurant, or souvenir.
But they’ll remember the stories.
Remember when Grandpa told that funny story on the cruise?
Remember when Grandma beat everyone at cards?
Remember when Pap saw Alaska?
Remember that sunset we watched together?
Those are the moments that become woven into a family forever.
