Cruise Line Private Destinations: Are Day Beds, Clamshells, and Umbrella Rentals Worth the Money?
One of the most common questions I get from clients planning a cruise is whether they should spend extra money renting a day bed, beach umbrella, clamshell, or reserved seating area at a cruise line's private destination.
The answer depends on your travel style, budget, and what you want from your beach day. While there are definitely pros and cons, I'll be honest—I'm firmly in the "rent it" camp.
For me, having a designated home base for the day makes the experience significantly more enjoyable.
The Pros of Renting a Day Bed or Reserved Beach Space
You Have a Guaranteed Spot
One of the biggest advantages is peace of mind.
Popular cruise destinations like Perfect Day at CocoCay, Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay, Castaway Cay, and Ocean Cay can become crowded, especially when multiple ships are in port.
Without a reserved space, you may find yourself wandering around looking for available chairs, trying to find shade, or settling for a location far from the beach or pool.
When you reserve a day bed or umbrella package, your spot is waiting for you.
No stress. No searching.
You Have a Home Base
This is my biggest reason for renting.
Throughout the day, members of your group may want to swim, grab lunch, explore, shop, enjoy water activities, or simply take a walk along the beach.
Having a designated location means everyone knows where to return.
It's your headquarters for the day.
Need to reapply sunscreen? Home base.
Want to grab a drink and relax? Home base.
Looking for your spouse, kids, or travel companions? Home base.
It makes the entire day feel more organized and relaxing.
Shade Can Be Priceless
Caribbean sun is no joke.
Even if you love being in the water, you'll likely want breaks from the sun throughout the day.
Day beds, umbrellas, and clamshells provide much-needed shade and can make the difference between a relaxing beach day and a sunburned evening onboard.
Storage for Your Belongings
Nobody wants to carry towels, bags, phones, sunscreen, shoes, and other personal items everywhere they go.
Having a dedicated area allows you to keep your belongings in one location while enjoying the destination.
While you should never leave valuables unattended, having a central location makes managing your group's belongings much easier.
Comfort Matters
Many day beds and premium seating areas include padded loungers, upgraded furniture, drink service, or enhanced beach access.
If you're spending six to eight hours ashore, comfort can make a big difference.
The Cons of Renting a Day Bed or Umbrella
Additional Cost
The most obvious drawback is price.
Depending on the destination and season, rentals can range from relatively affordable to surprisingly expensive.
For some travelers, that money may be better spent on excursions, specialty dining, or other vacation experiences.
You May Not Use It Enough
If you're the type of traveler who plans to spend most of the day ziplining, snorkeling, riding waterslides, horseback riding, or participating in excursions, you may not get enough value from a reserved beach space.
The less time you spend relaxing, the less benefit you'll receive from the rental.
Some Destinations Already Have Plenty of Seating
Certain private destinations offer a large number of complimentary loungers and beach chairs.
If you arrive early and don't mind searching a little, you may find a perfectly acceptable free location.
Weather Happens
Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate.
A cloudy, rainy, or windy day can reduce the value of a rental if you don't spend as much time enjoying the beach as originally planned.
My Personal Opinion
If I'm visiting a cruise line private destination, I almost always rent some type of reserved space.
Whether it's a day bed, umbrella setup, clamshell, or upgraded beach area, I enjoy knowing that I have a guaranteed location waiting for me.
I like having a home base.
I like having shade.
I like having a place to relax between activities.
And I like not having to rush off the ship hoping to claim a good spot before everyone else.
Could I save money by skipping it?
Absolutely.
But for me, the added comfort, convenience, and peace of mind are worth every penny.
The Bottom Line
If your ideal beach day involves relaxing, swimming, enjoying a few drinks, and spending quality time with family and friends, a day bed or reserved beach setup can significantly improve your experience.
If you're planning a highly active day filled with excursions and adventure activities, you may be better off saving the money.
There isn't a right or wrong answer—it simply depends on how you vacation.
As for me?
Give me the day bed, the umbrella, and a frozen drink. I'll be perfectly happy spending the day enjoying paradise.
