The Greatest Investment We Ever Made Was Traveling Together as a Family
When people think about family vacations, they usually picture beaches, resorts, theme parks, or sightseeing.
But as a parent, I’ve learned something over the years:
Family travel is never really about the destination.
It’s about the memories your children carry with them long after the trip is over.
Some of my favorite memories as a father come from traveling with my family — especially watching my youngest son, Braxton, experience the world with this incredible excitement and curiosity that honestly reminds me what life is supposed to be about.
Braxton absolutely loves to travel.
Not just the pools or the beaches… but the adventure of it all.
And if there’s one thing about him everyone knows, it’s that he’s a foodie through and through. The kid genuinely loves trying new foods everywhere we go. Whether it’s local restaurants, hidden gems, resort cuisine, or something completely outside of his comfort zone, he dives right into the experience. Watching your child become excited about different cultures, flavors, and experiences is one of the coolest things a parent can witness.
But our family travel story didn’t start with passports and tropical resorts.
Like so many families from the Pittsburgh area, one of our long-standing traditions for years was making the drive to Ocean City, Maryland.
And honestly?
Those trips were magical.
The car rides.
The beach days.
The boardwalk food.
Mini golf battles.
Late-night walks by the ocean.
Stopping for snacks along the drive.
At the time, you don’t realize those moments are becoming part of your family’s foundation. But years later, they become the stories everyone still talks about around the dinner table.
That’s the beauty of family travel.
It doesn’t have to be extravagant to matter.
But over time, our adventures began growing.
What started as road trips eventually turned into bigger experiences and bigger memories. And getting to watch Braxton experience the world beyond what he knew at home has been one of the most rewarding parts of being a parent.
He’s now experienced:
The nonstop lights and excitement of Las Vegas
The energy and food culture of New York City
The beautiful beaches and adventures of Cancun, Mexico
The tropical paradise of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic
The vibrant island atmosphere of Montego Bay, Jamaica
And even the breathtaking island of Curaçao
Every destination brought something different.
Different cultures.
Different foods.
Different people.
Different experiences.
And every trip helped shape perspective.
That’s something I don’t think people talk about enough when it comes to travel.
Travel educates people in ways a classroom never can.
Children learn confidence.
They learn communication.
They learn appreciation.
They learn adaptability.
They learn that the world is so much bigger than the small routines we sometimes get trapped inside.
Some of my favorite moments aren’t even the “big” moments.
It’s watching Braxton get excited over a local restaurant.
Trying authentic food for the first time.
Talking about places he wants to visit one day.
Watching him light up seeing crystal-clear Caribbean water.
Seeing him experience different walks of life and different cultures.
As parents, we spend so much time working hard to provide for our children.
But one of the greatest gifts we can ever give them isn’t material things.
It’s experiences.
Experiences become memories.
Memories become stories.
And stories become part of who we are forever.
That’s one of the reasons opening Ever After Escapes became so personal to me.
Travel changed my life.
It strengthened our family.
It gave us memories we’ll carry forever.
And now, helping other families create those same moments means everything to us.
Whether it’s a simple beach vacation, a Caribbean all-inclusive resort, a cruise, a family adventure, or a bucket-list destination halfway across the world, the value of family travel can’t truly be measured in dollars.
Because years from now, your kids probably won’t remember the random toy they got one Christmas.
But they will remember:
Laughing on the beach together
Exploring a new city
Trying new foods
Watching sunsets as a family
Swimming in the ocean
The excitement of boarding a plane
The stories created along the way
Those moments last forever.
And honestly?
Watching your children experience the world may be one of the greatest feelings life has to offer.
Because at the end of the day…
The best family stories don’t begin at home.
They begin with a boarding pass.
