The Great American Road Trip: Miles, Memories & Family Traditions

Some of Life's Best Memories Start in a Packed Car

Before luxury resorts, all-inclusive vacations, and airline reward points, there was something magical about loading up the family car and hitting the open road.

When I think back on my childhood, I don't remember expensive attractions or fancy hotels.

I remember family.

I remember my dad loading up the station wagon—or sometimes a rented van—and taking us on adventures that felt larger than life.

Back then, family vacations weren't just Mom, Dad, and the kids.

They were full-scale family reunions on wheels.

Grandparents.

Aunts.

Uncles.

Cousins.

Everybody piled into vehicles headed toward the same destination, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Our favorite destinations became traditions:

🏖️ Duck, North Carolina

🏖️ Bethany Beach, Delaware

🏖️ Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Looking back now, I realize those trips weren't really about where we were going.

They were about who we were going with.

Uncle Jim, Uncle Mark & The Adventures I Wasn't Supposed to Have

Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around my Uncle Jim and Uncle Mark.

At the time, they were fresh out of college, enjoying their first real jobs, and probably had no business being responsible for a young nephew.

Which made them the perfect uncles.

While my parents were busy doing responsible parent things, Uncle Jim and Uncle Mark were busy making sure I had the time of my life.

Waterparks.

Arcades.

Ice cream stops.

Mini golf.

Anything fun immediately became part of the agenda.

Years later I learned that Uncle Mark may have had an ulterior motive.

Apparently, bringing along a cute young nephew was his secret weapon for meeting girls.

At the time, I had no idea I was being used as a wingman.

I just thought I was living my best life.

And honestly?

I probably was.

The Road Trips That Taught Me About America

Not every trip was about beaches and boardwalks.

My dad had a passion for history, aviation, and storytelling.

One of our favorite traditions was traveling to Dayton, Ohio for the annual air show and a visit to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

To a young kid, those aircraft seemed enormous.

I still remember walking through those hangars and staring up at planes that looked like they could touch the sky.

But what made those trips special wasn't just the airplanes.

It was my dad.

He never missed an opportunity to teach.

Road trips often included unexpected stops at battlefields, historical sites, and monuments.

As we stood where history happened, he would tell stories about relatives who had served our country.

Stories of courage.

Stories of sacrifice.

Stories of family.

Without realizing it, those trips were teaching me lessons that would stay with me forever.

Then Life Happened

Eventually, I grew up.

I got married.

Started a family.

Became a dad.

And just like most parents, I wanted to recreate those magical vacations I experienced growing up.

The problem?

Life doesn't always cooperate.

There were years when money was tight.

Years when I worked jobs I wasn't proud of.

Years when simply paying the bills felt like an accomplishment.

I desperately wanted to give my family the experiences my father gave me.

But for a long time, it felt out of reach.

Then one year, everything changed.

The Ocean City Tradition

We booked a family vacation to Ocean City, Maryland.

Nothing extravagant.

Nothing luxurious.

Just a family beach vacation.

What happened next surprised all of us.

We fell in love.

Not just with Ocean City.

With family travel itself.

That one trip turned into over a decade of traditions, memories, and annual pilgrimages to the Maryland shore.

And one restaurant quickly became the center of many of those memories.

Ropewalk Oyster House

Now let me say this very clearly.

I love food.

But I absolutely LOVE Ropewalk Oyster House.

What started as a random lunch stop became an annual tradition.

The food was so incredible that during our first trip we went back again.

Then again.

Three times in one week.

Every year afterward, it became mandatory.

Father's Day dinner.

And dinner again on our final night before heading home.

The food is phenomenal.

The service is top-tier.

But what truly makes it special is the view.

Watching the sun set over the bay while sharing a meal with the people you love is one of those experiences that reminds you what vacations are really about.

Not checking off attractions.

Not rushing from place to place.

Simply being together.

More Than Just Family

As the years passed, our Ocean City trips grew.

Friends became family.

Family became traditions.

We shared those adventures with:

  • Sam Moyer

  • Matt Doubt

  • Mike Killmeyer

  • Helene Killmeyer

  • Their three daughters

  • Oscar Stevens

  • Cindy Stevens

And many others who became part of the story.

Looking back, I can't remember every meal.

I can't remember every attraction.

But I can remember the laughter.

I can remember the conversations.

I can remember the people.

And that's what matters.

The Road Eventually Led Somewhere New

After nearly a decade of Ocean City memories, our adventures began evolving.

The family road trips started turning into flights.

The beaches became more tropical.

The adventures became a little bigger.

Suddenly we were exploring:

🏝️ Jamaica

🏝️ Punta Cana

🏝️ Cancun

🏝️ Curacao

We discovered all-inclusive resorts.

Oceanfront suites.

Excursions.

Dolphin encounters.

Bucket-list experiences.

And some truly unforgettable moments.

Yet no matter how amazing those destinations have been, there's still something special about the Great American Road Trip.

Why Road Trips Still Matter

A road trip isn't really about the destination.

It's about the journey.

It's the roadside diner you accidentally discover.

It's the historic marker you weren't planning to stop at.

It's the family debate over what music gets played next.

It's the snacks.

The jokes.

The stories.

The unexpected detours.

It's the conversations that only happen when you're trapped together in a vehicle for hours.

Years later, you won't remember every hotel room.

You won't remember every souvenir.

You won't remember every attraction.

But you'll remember who was sitting beside you.

The Legacy of Travel

Today, through Ever After Escapes, I have the privilege of helping families create their own memories.

Some choose luxury cruises.

Some choose all-inclusive resorts.

Some choose bucket-list international adventures.

And many still choose the classic American road trip.

No matter where the road leads, the goal remains the same:

Create memories.

Because one day those vacations become stories.

And those stories become family legends.

The stories your children tell.

The stories your grandchildren hear.

The stories that keep loved ones close long after the trip is over.

Final Thoughts

When I look back on those vacations with my dad, my grandparents, Uncle Jim, Uncle Mark, and the rest of my family, I realize they gave me something priceless.

Not souvenirs.

Not photographs.

Not even vacations.

They gave me memories.

And memories are one of the few investments that never lose value.

So whether your next adventure involves an RV, a beach house, a national park, a theme park, or simply a full tank of gas and an open road...

Take the trip.

Bring the people you love.

Make the memories.

Because the best stories don't start when you arrive.

They start the moment you pull out of the driveway.
