Setting Sail for the First Time: A Father, A Son, and an Adventure Across the Caribbean
Setting Sail for the First Time: A Father, A Son, and an Adventure Across the Caribbean
So yesterday, Sunday, I left to do something that surprises many people when I tell them.
I'm going on my very first cruise.
For someone who spends so much time talking about travel, helping clients plan vacations, and researching destinations around the world, you would think I would have checked cruising off my bucket list years ago. Yet somehow, despite helping countless travelers set sail on their own adventures, I had never stepped aboard a cruise ship myself.
That finally changes this week.
On Sunday, my son Braxton and I boarded our ship, Carnival's Magic, in Miami and begin a six-day Eastern Caribbean adventure that will take us to Celebration Key in the Bahamas, Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, and Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. To say we're excited would be an understatement.
For me, this trip represents the fulfillment of a travel goal I've had for years. For Braxton, it represents something even bigger. At fourteen years old, this cruise is already shaping up to be one of the highlights of his summer, and perhaps one of those experiences he'll still be talking about years from now. As a father, that's the part that excites me the most.
Like many travelers, I initially looked at the planning process and thought about everything that needed to come together. There were flights to coordinate, hotels to book, transportation to arrange, drink packages to evaluate, Wi-Fi packages to consider, and countless details that can sometimes make vacation planning feel more like work than fun. Fortunately, I had a secret weapon.
Our team's resident cruise expert, Steve Buettner.
One of the great advantages of being surrounded by travel professionals is knowing who to call when you need an expert. Steve has helped countless clients navigate the cruise world, and working with him made the entire process incredibly simple. What could have been weeks of research and second-guessing turned into a smooth, organized process. Flights were booked. The pre-cruise hotel was arranged. The drink package was selected. Wi-Fi was added. Transportation was handled. Every detail was accounted for.
Then came the surprise that made the trip even better.
We upgraded to a suite.
Now, before planning this cruise, I probably underestimated how important your cabin selection can be. The more I learned, the more I realized that your stateroom isn't just a place to sleep. It's your home for the week. It's where you start your mornings, unwind after excursions, and enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the trip.
Having extra space, upgraded amenities, and a more comfortable environment will make a tremendous difference, especially traveling with Braxton. Sometimes the little upgrades end up creating the biggest improvements to a vacation experience.
As excited as I am about the ship itself, the destinations are what truly captured my imagination.
Our first stop will be Celebration Key in the Bahamas, one of the most anticipated new cruise destinations in the Caribbean. Every photo I've seen looks like something straight out of a travel magazine. Crystal-clear turquoise water, pristine beaches, expansive pools, and all the tropical scenery people dream about when they imagine the Bahamas. For someone experiencing his first cruise, it feels like the perfect introduction to the Caribbean.
I can already picture Braxton running toward the water the moment we arrive.
If there's one thing I've learned through our travels together, it's that Braxton absolutely loves the beach. Whether we're in Florida, Mexico, or anywhere with warm weather and water, he is happiest when he's exploring, swimming, and simply enjoying the experience. I have a feeling Celebration Key may end up becoming one of his favorite stops of the entire trip.
Our next destination will be Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, and this is where the adventure really begins.
Nestled along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Amber Cove offers a fascinating mix of natural beauty, Caribbean culture, and exciting excursions. The photographs showcase dramatic mountain backdrops, colorful architecture, lush tropical landscapes, and crystal-clear waters. It's the kind of place that immediately makes you want to get off the ship and start exploring.
As a traveler, I've always believed that some of the best memories come from experiencing destinations beyond the typical tourist attractions. Amber Cove feels like one of those places where every excursion offers a chance to create a story worth telling later. Whether it's waterfalls, beaches, wildlife encounters, or simply exploring the local culture, I have a feeling this stop may end up surprising us both.
Then comes Grand Turk.
Of all the destinations on our itinerary, this might be the one that fascinates me most.
Every photograph I've seen looks almost unreal. The water is so clear and vibrant that it hardly seems possible. The beaches stretch endlessly along the shoreline, and the entire island appears to move at a pace that reminds visitors to slow down and simply enjoy the moment.
Grand Turk is famous for snorkeling, marine life, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. For many travelers, it's the type of destination they visit once and immediately begin planning a return trip. I completely understand why.
Of course, there is another aspect of cruising that I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited about.
The food.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a foodie.
Whether it's searching for the perfect cheesesteak in Philadelphia, finding hidden restaurant gems in Las Vegas, enjoying grouper sandwiches on Florida's Gulf Coast, or experiencing authentic local cuisine while traveling, food has always been one of my favorite parts of any trip.
Cruising, from everything I've heard, takes that experience to another level.
Elegant dining rooms. Casual poolside favorites. International cuisine. Seafood. Steakhouses. Desserts. Late-night snacks. Buffets that seem to stretch for miles. Every day offers the opportunity to try something new, and that sounds like a pretty fantastic challenge to me.
The best part is that Braxton has become quite the foodie himself over the years.
One of my favorite things about traveling with him is watching his willingness to try new foods and experience different cultures through cuisine. Whether we're exploring New York City, Las Vegas, Florida, or the Caribbean, food has become one of the ways we create memories together.
I suspect the dining experiences onboard will become some of our favorite moments.
But when I really think about why this trip matters, it has very little to do with the ship, the ports, the suite, or even the food.
This trip is about time.
Time together.
Time away from daily responsibilities.
Time creating memories.
As the father of a child with special needs, I've always believed experiences are one of the greatest gifts we can give. Vacations aren't simply about visiting destinations. They're about creating moments that become part of your family's story.
I know there will be moments during this cruise that neither of us will ever forget.
Watching Miami disappear into the distance as the ship sets sail.
Standing on the upper decks as endless ocean surrounds us.
Exploring tropical islands for the first time together.
Laughing about something unexpected.
Sharing meals.
Watching sunsets.
Experiencing new places side by side.
Those are the moments that truly matter.
When people talk about cruising, they often focus on the amenities, entertainment, restaurants, or destinations. Those things are certainly important. But I suspect the true magic of cruising comes from something much simpler.
It gives you permission to slow down.
To disconnect from the routine.
To spend uninterrupted time with the people you love most.
In a world where everyone is constantly busy, that may be the greatest luxury of all.
In just a few days, Braxton and I will step aboard our first cruise ship and begin an adventure neither of us has ever experienced before. We'll leave Miami behind, sail toward the Caribbean, and spend six days creating memories that I know we'll carry with us for years to come.
Will the beaches be beautiful?
Absolutely.
Will the food be amazing?
I certainly hope so.
Will the destinations exceed expectations?
Probably.
But years from now, when I look back on this trip, I have a feeling those won't be the things I remember most.
I'll remember seeing the excitement on Braxton's face.
I'll remember the adventures we shared.
I'll remember the laughter, the conversations, and the moments that only happen when a father and son set out to explore the world together.
Because the greatest destinations aren't measured by miles traveled.
They're measured by memories made.
And I have a feeling we're about to make some incredible ones.
